How to practice hand writing...

Without actually hand writing? 6yo DS is struggling with writing and pencil grip. Has anyone got suggestions of fun ways he can practice without actually sitting and writing long chains of the same letter over and over like the school expect him to? We've done dot to dots and he hates colouring in.

A tray of sand/salt or similar that he can 'write' with his finger tips
My son's school have small blocks of wood with letters indented into them, the children run a marble along the indent. I have no idea where they're available though I'm afraid.
Painting, Hama beads, Lego.

This is an excellent free resource

And when ready to try writing again, this is helpful
