Friendship angst! Year 2 friendship groups...

I know I am just worrying too much about this- and I don't want DS to worry.

There's a group of boys he really likes in YR2, who all seem to be a little bit older or sportier than my DS, IYKWIM? They all have older brothers- DS is an only child. Maybe coincidence?

He wants to play with them (used to play a lot together in reception/ YR1) but now they won't let him.

I guess I'm just feeling sad for DS and wishing I could help- is anyone else in this position?

Ewwww I hate school grouuops Sad

Not sure I can be of much use... My DS is also in year 2 and like probably all children he comes home from time to time and says things that worry me a bit (x wouldn't play with me, I have to play with y or he'll be sad). I think I have a bit of a tendency to want to sort things out for him or tell him what to do, but I try not to because I think it's all part of learning how to do friendships.

The How to Talk So Kids Will listen book suggests that not making a big thing of a situation, so that children don't start to think it's more serious than it is. If he wants to talk, maybe talk through some strategies he might use - asking someone else to play instead?

Have you had any of them round for play dates?

Do they have any sports clubs at school? I think that the multi sport class at our school is fantastic for mixing up the friendship groups between the boys.

We have them round but DS has not been asked back many times. I agree I should not mention it to DS as I dont want him to worry. I do have that book, and it is great, thanks!

He is not into sport yet, have tried a few clubs but hasn't really clicked for him yet. Pity because it might help. He likes playing sport with his dad but seems to worry that he will lose too much to enjoy playing with others.

Thanks for your thoughts, it helps to talk about it on here Smile
