I assume this is primary. I would look for children happily learning in a stimulating atmosphere. The children should be engaged in what they are doing and there should be no excessive chatter or shouting. Are the classrooms well resourced? What size are the classes? How are the classes organised? Is the Head or another member of staff pleased to show you round? Are they proud of the school? Does it meet your basic requirements of standards and care? Is the Head happy to answer your questions? What are your chances of getting in? Do you feel that your child would be happy going there? If you visit a number of schools you can tell which one suits best. You get a feel for it! If your child has specific needs, find out how these needs will be met. What are their settling in procedures? How do they teach reading? Is there a PTA? I am sure you can think of lots more! I also prefer to see staff reasonably smart and not scruffy.
