Maths homework help, am i being silly or has the teacher messed up?

Dd1 (9) has maths homework, she has number lines (I think that's what they are called), for example 12,000 at one end of the line and 12.500 at the other end and she has been given numbers such as 12,275 to write onto the number line, this is all fine but there are some number she has been asked to write that are not on the number line (for example 12,675, when the line only goes up to 12,500), there is no room on the page to extend the line so what should dd1 do?

Are we missing something? there are 3 numbers out of around 20 she has been asked to do that do not fit onto the number lines Hmm.

Add a new number line from 12 500 till 13 000?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2013 16:20

Sounds like the teacher has messed up.

I think I'd draw my own line long enough to accommodate the full range of given numbers on a separate piece of paper and hand that in along with the work sheet.

I mean bellow where there is space, not add at the end of the ones already there.

There's no space on the sheet ,dd1 is refusing to draw another line on the back and has said she is going to go in and tell the teacher off for messing up Blush. Do the teachers make these work sheets or are they just printed off from some web site?

Errols advice about drawing a new line to accommodate the numbers is an excellent idea and may even get your child brownie points for initiative.

However, going to school to "tell the teacher off" for making a mistake is not advisable, it is rude and shows a lack of respect. (even if the teacher has made a mistake).

She shouldn't go in to tell the teacher off! she might have forgotten something that the teacher did tell them on how to deal with things like that.
Put the 3 nb in order on top of the 12 500 with an arrow pointing outward to the end of the paper?

CecilyP · 18/09/2013 16:56

No she shouldn't go in and tell the teacher off - the task may be to identify the numbers that don't fit on the number line!

Marne · 18/09/2013 16:59

I'm sure she wont tell the teacher off (even though she wants too), she gets very upset if there's a mistake in her work as she has Aspergers and things have to be just right Smile but she also has manors so will control herself.

She hasn't messed up! It is to test that your DD knows they don't fall within that range and to leave them off! If you want she can write underneath 12650 not within range!
