My child has just gone up to year 2. He has poor fine motor skills with
high achiever capabilities in all other areas.
He struggles to hold a pencil correctly. After much trial and error I've got him using a pencil claw which is fab. WHEN he gets to use it, his writing is beautiful.
However, his new teacher, fresh from college, had him using a triangular grip which he just can't use. I sent him in with a claw from home and a boy broke it. I sent another, explained to teacher the importance of him using it, and she's had it in a drawer since!
She agreed he could use it but now can't be bothered to make him wear it. What do I do? My sons confidence is falling daily!

Meet with SENCO and get it in writing that he should use it . Not sure what you mean by claw though ? Has he been referred to an OT for assessment . Maybe sitting more supported and having a slope to lean on, for example, would also help .

is it one of these? www.writingclaw.com/Pages/default.aspx
I haven't heard of them before.

I would send in a letter to the teacher copied to SENCO/Head Teacher and say that you have been using this over the holidays with him, it has worked extremely well and can he please use it for all written work.

And/or try to see the SENCO face to face but a written letter to you spelling out what he needs should at least get the ball rolling, if it is in writing and they ignore it then you can seriously complain. It isn't an unreasonable request, it is sensible, it helps him, it is of no significance to anyone else, doesn't affect anyone else and you are supplying it not expecting the school to pay for it. No reason for him not to be allowed to use it.

Yes it is the writing grip. It is amazing. Spent a fortune on different grips but there is nothing like this. Thank you for your support
