Magazines for primary aged children

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good magazines for primaru aged children. I was looking for something with a bit of appropriate for age world news/ current affairs, non-fiction articles, maybe short stories as well for DS's currently aged 4 & 5. DS1 has a reading age of about 9 years. I have been searching the supermarket shelves but haven't seen anything at all. Don't want something to dry so bright and engaging would be good.
What is national geographic kids like? Or any others I could have a look at?

It is a newspaper rather than a magazine, but have you looked at First News?

I was also going to recommend first news - my almost 16 year old still talks about it from his primary days.

DS, 8, quite enjoyed national kids geographic. Very animals biased but good bits about natural phenomena and good for upcoming toys and games, films and books. Gives your child a bit of street cred.

DS is currently subscribed to Aquila, a present, which he does not enjoy as much. It is fairly academic in content, but 'may' appeal to girls more. It has features on history, geography etc and goes into a lot more detail than national kids. The overall appearance is more 'old fashioned', but do not know why it has not appealed to DS.

DD1 (9) has National Geographic and enjoys it a lot.

DD2 (6) has one called storybox which she loves as it has lots of stories in it.

Mine didn't like Aquila either, despite enjoying the RSPB and Young Archaeology Club magazines as well as First News.

NG Kids did us proud for about four years, age 7 to 11. You can find NG Kids in Waitrose if you want a browse, like all these things it is far far cheaper to get it as a subscription

Another vote for NG kids.....we get an annual sub via Tesco vouchers:

and have done so for past 4 years or so.

The Phoenix is good - a nice mix of cartoons/stories.

It's available in waitrose.
