DD1 starts reception in a few weeks and I could do with some advice re uniform.

  1. PE kit - it says dark shorts, I've looked in the shops and most of the girls shorts are cycling shorts but I'm not sure if these are right for reception, the other shorts I've seen are boys football shorts. I have seen some jersey shorts in Next but this is the only place I have seen them? Any advice?

  2. Is the summer uniform (gingham dress) only for the summer term or do you put them in that if it's hot in september?

I know I should have probably asked someone before school broke up or ask another mum but I work full time and haven't seen the other mums all summer and don't want DD to be the only one in the wrong stuff!!

We also wear gingham dress in September but have winter uniform ready as the weather can change quickly.

Girls at our school all wear cotton PE shorts like the boys (get mine in a two pack from M&S) and yes, most kids go back in summer uniform. Mine would still wear shorts in November if I'd let them :)

Yes cycling shorts.

Schools vary re policy but ours allows us to send girls in summer dress if it is warm in September.

Cycling shorts are fune. I would not bother with a gingham dress for reception September unless you find a cheap one somewhere. She will outgrow it before spring 2014. It is rare I see reception girls in summer drrsses for the September. She will not be the only one in winter uniform

Thanks for your help, will get the cycling shorts I think and will see what the weather is like on the first day but probably go with winter uniform. I have a few summer dresses already thanks to my lovely over enthusiastic MIL. First grandchild to start school!

Crazy how much you worry about getting it right for them isn't it?!

I have a ds but am a TA so have seen what the girls wear. Cycling shorts are fine as are the more boy style shorts ( I don't like those horrible shiny football style shorts so got ds rugby shorts which also look cute on girls).

You can choose summer dresses or winter uniform, but I suspect more children will be in winter uniform as lots stick to winter uniform all year round. HTH :)

chickensandbees · 16/08/2013 11:39

yes it was shiny football shorts I saw and thought they didn't look/feel great.

thanks.

They are horrible! Asda do a 2 pack of nice thick cotton rugby shorts though that are much nicer!
