Do they start streaming in year 1?

DS1 is starting year 1 in September. Someone told me that they start streaming the children for English and Maths in Year 1. More than a bit worried as DS1 is ok with his reading but slightly behind with maths, according to the report at the end of reception. Just don't want him to be labelled. Seems so young to be doing it. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I didn't say it wasn't usual. I said that limiting groups to the amount of chairs at tables was in no way good or common practice, and that generalising about high ability groups using worksheets/receiving less teacher time wasn't usual, either.

And the DfE are referring to setting in your quote - not ability grouping.

Is it a massive school? In all the schools I've been in, children are in achievement based groups (usually tables) for maths and English. However, all the teachers I know treat this is a fluid way, moving children between groups very regularly and paticularly in maths according to the topic (some children are very good with number, but struggle with shape or vice versa). Streaming seems to be very unlikely.
