Help! Re-learning the phonics sounds and not letters

Hi all. Anyone have experience of "undoing" the learning of the alphabet in favour of phonics? My parents have been teaching my daughter the old sounds and not the phonics sounds. I was also pretty clueless until I found myself watching alphablocks the other week...

The problem is my daughter is stubbornly sticking to the "fuh" instead of "fff" and "muh" instead of "mmm". In some ways i'm proud - she knows her letters - but how will the teacher deal with this? (DD starts school in Sept). Reception teachers must have some experience of undoing the well-intended mistakes of families!!

Help.

Which particular ones do find confusing, Mrz?

For children identical letter strings, such as -ough, are just that: identical. Sometimes they are one grapheme (though, through), sometimes two (tough, cough). That is confusing for beginning readers. And perhaps for u too?

Letters/graphemes with just one pronunciation, such as ee, are much easier. Are u disputing that?

wo: won - woman, women, womb
wor: word – worn
omb: tombola - bomb, comb, tomb
imb: limb – climb
ho: house - hour
ine: define –engine, machine

etc etc etc

lol Tinker I would not be concerned ok, as long as she has the basics shes well ahead if the average child out there. If you are concerned you can check out a great phonics program I highly recommend on easylearnreading.com I used it to teach both my monsters to read and write before they started school. And do not put concerns about teachers methods before your child's needs, our education system has a very poor track record at present, and who or what is more important?

Teach your parents phonics.
