Write from the Start

Anybody got any knowledge of this? DS2 finds writing very tricky, so his handwriting is often illegible and he struggles to write more than few words. He's just leaving Y1, and the SENCO has given me a photocopy of the Teacher's Book plus Part 1, for me to use with him in the holidays if I can get him to sit down and concentrate. I'd be very interested to hear others' experiences.

Thanks.

I use Write from the Start as an intervention in KS1 alongside practising correct letter formation on handwriting lines and other exercises.

Yes, I use it too - mainly KS1 children, but some KS2 can benefit too.

Did he/she talk to you about learning correct letter formation by doing large letters (using chalks/paintbrush and water) on wall/ground outside? Your DS must be watched doing it to ensure he is forming them correctly. And correct grip and positioning!

This is what worries me! Am happy to follow the booklet I've been given. But I really want to know that someone is taking a bit of time with him at school to make sure all letters are being formed correctly. I can see now that they are not...

It's much easier to do 1-1 or in a small group and often children revert to poor formation as soon as you walk away ... little and often home and school if possible.

It really is something that parents can really help with at home as you are right, it is hard in a mainstream school to give regular 1:1 time unless the child has identified SEN. If you give him 5-10mins a day, it will really helpSmile
