Ds received all level 3's in his year 2 sats. Tbh I was sceptical about the literacy level but that would beanother point.
The school only give nc levels on reporrts during sat years but I deduced the following from ds.
End of year 3 3a. Start of year 4 3c. Now obviously I am not sure what level he would have got at end year 4 but I am assuming 3a would be the maximum based on 3c at start of year.
Yet report shows working above level expected for literacy. (Except handwriting).
Can any teacher's help me make sense ocf this?
Would you advise me to get clarification on nc level or should I just accept he is doing ok and that year 2 levels were inflated.
In the past when I have asked they have not been keen to give out much info.

Am confused by your levels? Are you saying dc ending y2 on a 3, ended y3 on a 3a but went down two sublevels to a 3c by the start of y4?

curlew · 21/07/2013 12:31

Take with a massive pinch of salt anything your ds tells you.

Ask his form teacher for his current levels- she should be able to access them instantly, if she can't, go to the Head.

Yes redlock
Year 2 level3 which I understand is 3b
End year 3 3a
New teacher start of year 4 3c
The 3a I saw on a target card.

Think I also remember something with 3c on.
So in the circunstances I assume it would be to ask current level. Also what level would equate to working above at end year 4?
Thank you.

They are generally expected to make 2 sub levels of progress a year, although it's not an exact science. So if he was, say 3c at the end of year 2, he should be something like 4c/b by the end of year 4.

I would go in on Monday and ask the teacher. Does his report suggest they are happy with his progress?

Redlocks30 · 21/07/2013 12:52

Are all these grades for one subject, eg writing? Or are some for reading and others for writing? Obviously, these can be quite different. It is also quite possible for the y3 teacher to have levelled your child's writing at the end of y3 as a 3a, but for then for the y4 teacher to level an individual piece of writing at the beginning of y4 as a 3c.

Expected level for y2 is 2 (b) and for year 6 is 4 (b) which makes the expected level for y4 to be a 3 (b). Obviously anything above that would be above the expected level.

A level 3 in Y2 could be 3C, 3B or 3A if it was 3C and his target was 3A it seems he has failed to reach that target and ended the year at the same level he began it and has failed to make a full level progress over the two years ...

Feenie · 21/07/2013 14:17

They are generally expected to make 2 sub levels of progress a year

That's good progress, not expected progress, curlew.

As mrz says, expected progress in KS2 would be a whole level over two years. So if the OP's ds finished Y2 as a 3c, he would be expected to be a 4c now.

I would clarify the situation with the school, OP - I would want to know.

martini84 · 21/07/2013 14:20

Thanks mrz tbh I think he was probably more 2a than 3c although I am no expert. Think school bigged up levela a little. That is whats worrying me that there doesn't appear to be much progess there.
Maybe I should just ask.
Also wondering if low level for could be because of presentation. Would that impact on final level.
Reading I think he is doing ok. Said he was in top guided reading group although in a year 3/4 class so understable in a way.

So if now 3a that would explain working above but on face of it could still be disappointing.

martini, it might be that he's just not quite secure at the next level yet. My DS (yr4) had moved one level over the year for his writing so I asked if that was okay progress. His teacher said one level's fine, but that he's working confidently at the next level, but she give him that as a final grade just yet as he's not quite secure in every element of it. I'm sure mrz and feenie can explain it better. Confused

Well i was brave and asked school. Scores are reading 4c writing 3a and numeracy 4b.
So whilst writing is only 2 sublevels progess at most i am fairly happy as i think 3c was ambitious for year 2 in writing.
