How are teacher assessed Sats levels moderated?

Can anyone tell me how teacher assessed levels are moderated to ensure that they give a consistently reliable result please? Does another teacher at the school look at the work assessed to sign it off or is it down to the headteacher? In the case of a NQT in a supply teaching position for year 6 would the results be double checked by their mentor?
Many thanks in advance
Katie

Last year independent moderators chose schools at random. They came out and asked to see a range of work from children they picked from the class register.

We gave them our class books and evidence of work for them to decide if our judgement was accurate.

Oh that is interesting..thank you ...Is this the only way that assessments are checked? If your school isn't selected for random checking how do teachers protect themselves from claims that they have over inflated assessments?

The school will have an internal moderation meeting with examples of work from each level, that will then be assessed by everyone there. Any differences will be discussed and ironed out.

We used to meet up with our family of schools for a moderation meeting also. This was very useful.

we weren't told we were going to be moderated until the last minute and I think the date for submitting results was before the final date for moderation. Therefore there was no time to realise you weren't going to be moderated and puff your results up.

They have area moderation meetings here - so teachers from a group of schools meet and take examples of work from various levels. This is on top of the schools' internal moderation process of course.
