What went wrong with the science?

Just had the Sats results back.
My child got level 5 in other subjects, Level 6 in matchs but
was marked at level 4 for science. This is apparently a "teacher's assessment".

I wasn't even aware they were marked for science at this age, guess the school don't do Sats in this subject.

So the question is - do they only teach up to Level 4? Or was my child asleep during the lessons (only joking!).

Not upset by result (wasn't expecting Science to even be listed!) just a bit confused. Anyone else out there come across this?

They do mark to level 5, but from what I have seen the level of understanding has to be very deep.
My DD has achieved a level 5, but a lot of the knowledge for that level had come from exposure at home. I have two science degrees and tend to jump off when she asks about something I probably over do the detail for example when she asked about respiration I talked about the kerbs cycle and mitochondria.

Lonecatwithkitten - impressive! Well done!
the teacher they had this year wasn't the best teacher in the school, guess it probably reflects in the levels they reach.
My son was disappointed in his score because he felt he had done everything he could.

Roll on secondary school I guess!
thanks again!
