DD?s school report describes her writing target for next year as
?To use subordinating clauses in different parts of the sentence?.

Neither DH or I have more than a vague idea what this means. DD claims it is the first she has heard of it (and, as an aside, why is she being set a target for next year when she is changing schools ? won?t her new school set their own targets?) and DS (2 years older) claims never to have covered it either. I am guessing it may have been explained to the DC in a different way. Would some kind person please explain to me what it means? TIA.

Your DD will have learnt about subordinating clauses but may not have heard them called by the technical term. She will be given a target even though she is going to a new school as some parents like to do work with their child over the holidays. Some parents prefer for their child to have a complete rest over the summer but if they target is given then the option is there.

Thanks for examples kim147 - that makes sense now - and applicable to DD who tends to write all her sentences like your 2nd example (probably due to a previous target to use conjunctions to lenghten sentences!)

So we've been given targets to work on over the summer? I know people have different ideas about what DC should do over the summer, but can't imagine anyone wanting to work on something so narrow and specific.

I think a lot of people would redsky if it's what their child's next step is. You might not want to and that is fine. Others would want to which is fine too.

And that's exactly what targets should be - specific.
