Anyone know an enjoyable way to learn high frequency words for 5 year old?

Anyone got any ideas on how I can teach my 5 year old high frequency words over he Summer, but to make it a bitmore fun? He know the first 45 words so wil work with in the holidays on his words and reading.

Hi. You could hide them around the garden and go on a word hunt. Maybe have a prize for finding and reading them.

Your child could read a word at a time for you to run and get.

Write them on lolly sticks and hide them in the sand. Get them to help you write them out.

There are games online at phonics play.com that you may be able to access

My DS had to learn them 6 at a time.

I printed them off on to card twice and we played memory and snap with them.
More recently with his spellings I've laid the cards face down on the table and we take it in turns to pick one up and "test" the other person.
I also wrote them in chalk on the patio in different colours, and he jumped on them when I called the word. Then I asked him to read the green coloured words (for example)

Also (from reading on here) because they shouldn't really be sight reading the HFW, I broke the words down phonetically for him, and briefly explain the sounds to him. By the time he finished learning the 300 words he had cracked phonics anyway, so was whizzing through them sounding them out.

make them into a bingo game

At our school, they are written on fish shapes that are then cut out as words are given/added.

So I used ours to play hungry shark games/mermaid games etc where a successful read = gobbling it up/transforming it into pearls and so on.

Basically anything that makes a game of it!

Hi, I printed them and laminated them onto A4 sheets and then threw them around the garden. Shouted out a word and my son had to find and turn over the right one. Lots of frantic running and excitement meant he learnt to recognise the words at high speed!

Teach him phonics and practise sounding out a wide variety of words, not just high frequency ones. Write simple sentences using words which are decodable.

Teach 'tricky' words by explaining the tricky bit and then sounding them out each time.

Btw, the 45 reception words are not used any more. There are lists of high frequency words in the government phonics scheme 'Letters and sounds' but they are NOT intended to be learned by rote.

Read with him as much as you can. Fun books :)

However I agree with pozzled in that each "tricky word" is decodable but the child needs to learn/be shown the tricky bit iyswim.

Bingo works well with dd. Mix in pictures with the words, and see if he can 'beat you'

Squeebles bingo every time DD loves it and she is not a fan of numeracy.

The other thing I recommend is a board game called shut the box but it only seems to work for DD as she has an older brother to play with. I think if she was the oldest she would not be so into it. But it's great for learning number bonds to 10 without the child realising

Actually all the squeebles apps are pretty good but the bingo one is DD's favourite.

DD liked an app called sight words and on the jolly phonics website they list the tricky words. She was quite taken with reading them on the forbidden iPad instead of a book.
