Sats Year 4 - PLEASE EXPLAIN

We moved to the UK a while ago and this was the first time my daughter had a SATS test (I never heard of this before).

I asked if the teacher could explain the test to me and she said she would add a sheet to explain but all I saw was numbers and letters? It confused both my husband and I greatly and google only made us more confused!! It's probably simple but I don`t get it Blush !

I assumed her marks were ok as they were all 4's (assume that means Year4?) she had 4b for reading & writing, 4a for maths and than just a 4 for science.

Anyone can shed some light on this?

I'm not trained but think that a level 4b is the average for year6. Well according to my 9yo DS anyway. I can understand if you want a second opinion Grin

Level 2 is minimal acceptable for Year 2, Level 4 min acceptable for year 6 and Level 5 (but a high 5, so. 5a) min acceptable for Year 9.

A child should progress 2 levels each key stage, so a child who is level 2 in Yr 2 should be a level 4 in year 6 and a Level 6 in Year 9.

In a nutshell: SATs are taken at the end of Y2 and Y6, however schools assess children all the way through their time and give you a level at the end of each year so you know what you child is working out throughout their school career.

Level 4 is the government expectation for children leaving at the end of Y6 so if your child is getting level 4s in Y4 they are doing well and the school will be expecting her to get levels 5/6 by the time she gets to the real thing in Y6.

Hope that helps.

The numbers are the level they are working at, not the year. The letters a,b,c tells you whether the child is just at the beginning of the level (c) or at the top end of the level (a)
Average for end of year 4 is level 3b so it looks like your child is above average.

www.staveley.cumbria.sch.uk/documents/NCLevels.pdf sets out the expected levels year by year. 4s in year 4 is above average.
