Teachers - writing level 2 or 3

Teachers, does only work in their 'good' books count for their writing level?

Ie is it ok for work at home to be far below the level given at school?

Do you think this 'persuasive text', done with a tutor, looks more like a level 2 or level 3?

is this work "meeting national expectations" for a KS2 child?

Only if work is written independently would we use it to assign a level, other work is used as "back up evidence" but as it may be supported to some degree could give a misleading picture of what a child can actually achieve on their own. ( Other schools will have different ways of assigning an overall level but independent work would usually be expected in some form or another!)
As to the writing given, I would probably give it a low level 2 at the most. Where about' s in KS2 is your child?

If it was independent it is a 2. You level a child on a range of writing not on just one piece. But writing done with a tutor isn't independent.
When we do our independent writing in class, we will have built up to it over the week and discussed the features we need to see as well as reminding the children of their targets.

He's in Y5.

His report says he's "meeting national expectations".

And I know there is no way he is. I don't know why his teacher wrote that on his report.

I also know he was given a 3B in his writing optional SATs and I can't see how he could have got that either......

Independent for us is " here is a title/description/picture, write a report/narrative/poem, off you go!"

Sorry but if, as a year 5 teacher, I had a child who wrote like that ( assuming it is indicative of his general writing) there would be no way I could describe him as " meeting national expectations" ( and in any case a 3b would be the expected minimum level at the end of year 4, not year 5)
I think you need to have a serious word with his class teacher and the SENCO.

That's definitely a level 2 piece of work.

Writing samples need to be independent- I wouldn't use a piece of writing that had been assisted by a TA to do a level assessment, never mind a 1-to-1 tutor.

I would say your DC is below expectation for year 5, if that is the normal quality of work. By the end of year 5, the expected level is 3a/4c.

I think what his teacher's done is averaged a 4c for reading with a 3b for writing, called it a 3a and says he's meeting expectations.

Trouble is he's neither a 4c in reading nor a 3b in writing. I have never seen any work which is better than this.

I don't see what good will come out of another talk with his teacher and SENCO. They'll just nod and agree with whatever I say and then continue to do what they want.

He's been receiving plenty of support at school, including 1:1 with a dyslexia tutor.

So I have no idea why they've written his report in that way.

I wouldn't actually give it a level 2 ...some aspects of level 2 (I suspect due to tutor influence) but not enough to award a 2.

No way is that meeting national expectations for Y5. If the teacher thinks he is doing ok, that is a serious cause for concern. I would demand a meeting with the teacher and SENCO in the first instance. I'd ask to see examples of his best independent work, and ask for his level to be moderated- preferably by an experienced KS1 teacher. Then I'd want a very specific IEP written, which acknowledges that he is behind where he should be, and that he needs a lot of support.
