Someone please explain these SATS things in very simple terms

Am trying to understand it but dont! What is the 'expected' level for a year 4 child? Whats does the number and letter signify ? I am feeling very thick!

3b is fairly typical for the end of year 4. It annoys me that schools don't explain this stuff and just send the levels out to parents.
The whole thing is being scrapped soon anyway, although some schools will probably carry on using these levels voluntarily.

The levels start at 1 and each level is split into A B and C - the levels go
W (working towards level 1)
1C - beginning to work at level 1
1B - secure at level 1
1A - moving towards level 2 etc
2C
2B - The level the majority of children are expected to meet or exceed at the end of year 2
2A
3C
3B - expected level at the end of year 4
3A
4C
4B - the expected level at the end of year 6
4A and onwards

The levels continue into secondary school with a 5A/6C being the expected level at the end of year 9

That's what I thought FuzzyMum1 but my year 2 has been in tears as his teacher apparently said they should all be getting level 3s and tjose only getting 2b aren't trying their best. I am not impressed as DS is a very average ability August born child and the levels don't matter one bit to me I just want him to enjoy going to school.

I am beginning to wonder is the expected levels have changed. DS is due his report this afternoon.

Yes really. I was furious. I have calmed down about it now but I am going to request a meeting with her to discuss it, at the end of the day I expect she is under pressure to get results. However in my opinion 6 year olds shouldn't know about levels let alone care about them. I am off to get him now and cross my fingers the other parents aren't opening reports before yhey are out of the gates

After all that he got 3 for reading 3 for maths and 2b for writing and the explanation in the report explained 2b was expected for a 7 year old so of course he is walking on air and I am amazed and think the levels are over inflated.
I am howeve very proud that he is "such a kind little boy and that kindness shines through frequently" means far more than any numbers.

BUT
I'd still take up with the head that the teacher was utterly, utterly out of order hassling your DS about the grades.
He will not need to deal with her again, but some other kid with a less eloquent and supportive mum will do.

Thanks for the info, my boy is doing ok - he is behind on reading but I expected that.
