End of year meltdowns

My yr 1 aged 6 1/2 DS has turned from a sweet placid gentle little boy to a complete and utter cheeky, rude, stroppy, angry, tearful little sod in the last week. He doesn't do heat v well and is struggling to sleep my before 10pm despite keeping all routines the same. Is it just my child? Is there something wrong or does he just need the holidays sooner rather than later?!

No it's not just your child. Mine are both like that, as are many of my friends' children. It's seriously time for a break.

My DD (6, Y2) exactly the same. Nearly 2 more weeks...argh!

OTOH, DS(9) is fine. It gets better.

I think it's the heat - ds2 doesn't do heat well either.

I'm just easing right back in everything, cool showers, lots of lollies and ice cream.

Ds1 (year 4) is absolutely fine, so I think it's an age thing too.

Glad you started this thread! Was becoming worried about dd (yr 1) and her out of character grumpy, stroppy behaviour. Everything is 'no' and loads of tears in the last few weeks. Just got to hope it calms down in the hols or I'm dreading 6 weeks of it!!

My 11 yr old DD is driving me up the wall she struggles in the heat and I've had more problems with her the past week than I have the previous few months. It doesn't help that her moaning and tantrumming sets my other DC off!

Oh hooray!! In the nicest possible way of course that your kids are playing up too!!Friend just told me her super bright, super lovely child is lying on the floor having tantrums every day before school this week!

5 yo is fine

8 yo placid easy going dd is having meltdowns every morning over the fact that I want her to get ready for school

10 yo has been really nice to be around for the last 2 weeks

They are exhausted. I taught for years and you could see the wee souls just running out of steam. This presents often as stroppy or grumpy. Teachers are the same at this point. I went out for dinner with some old colleagues and they looked ten years older than they had at Christmas. I am so relieved to have moved on. Give it a week of the holidays of proper sleeping without alarms and bells/no homework etc and you will have your real kids back!

DD (reception) is being truly awful.

DS (yr3) is fine.

Deputy Head said today a lot of kids are struggling because of the heat and that this term has been so long.

same here - this half term is far too long at 8 weeks or whatever it is, it is far too hot and they are fed up. and the summer holiday isn't even 6 weeks!

A fan might help, in their bedrooms.

I think most of them though are just utterly exhausted, and the holidays can't come soon enough.

Yes! Glad it's not just ds, he's being a nightmare at the moment. And he's never slept fantastically, but at the moment it's just beyond.

Y1 DD is a nightmare at the moment and just crying over nothing everything

Y3 DS is actually being lovely which is unusual

Dd 6 just the same. She keeps flipping out over every small thing. The last straw is a splinter in her foot which.has blistered.

It's top hot, especially at night.
It's too light until well into the late evening.
They are exhausted.

My younger two are now so tired and out of sorts that they aren't able to fully enjoy all the end of term fun events.

Does anyone else think there is too much crammed into this half term?

I know that some stuff like sports days, summer fairs, and some trips have to wait for the weather....but our school has had goodness knows how many other activities, such as visiting roadshows and entertainers. Which also exhaust them!

We also had the hard sell on after-school activities just before Easter, for the summer term, so most of the children at our school are doing one or more after-school activities on top of everything else and it's too much.

Of course the timing of Easter this year didn't help, it's made for a long half term.

DD2 (5, year 1) actually challenged her TA in front of me today.

She got the wrong end of the stick and thought she needed home clothes for their walk to the park. I said I was sure it wasn't so. We went to the TA to check, and when she said 'no, it's uniform.' DD2 actually said ' So why did you say so, hey?? ' She said 'I didn't, DD2.' and she said 'You did! Why did you say it if it isn't true???'

I was mortified. (She was made to apologise).

DD (6,year 1) exactly the same. I have had a brief glimpse into the teenage years to come! Roll on a week on Wednesday.

One of the things that has helped is that for the last few days I am letting them do the bare minimum of homework. I am helping them more than usual with it, and have explained this to their teachers.

There is too much crammed in. Even dd's agreed with me when I asked her whether they can cope with doing so many different activities.

I have completely stepped back on reading, etc. with DD2. She's just exhausted. She's an August born year 1. She's knackered.

For the last few weeks we've just read the book that contains the information for her 'challenge'. This week's was 'volcanoes' and she had to write down two reasons why volcanic eruptions can be good, and what an extinct volcano is. I didn't even ask her to look at her other books.
