I keep asking dd1 about it but she didn't know why she wasn't getting a book. I always check her book bag for messages/

Bollocks

etc as soon as she comes out of school and she definitely has had no book. So yesterday there is a note in her reading diary asking us to return the book she had so it can be changed. She definitely has not had a book.

I fully accept that I should have chased it up before now but teachers v busy and make it clear that quick chats before and after school aren't great for them so I try not to.

But should they have flagged it up earlier? I'm a bit cross that they let it go that long. After all, I'm a new school parent who doesn't know their arse from their elbow. If she doesn't get a book 3 times a week how am I to know that's not normal, maybe end of termness or whatever.

well I have to admit I opened this thinking you would be saying that she wasn't getting a book for the last 3 weeks of term so they could collect them back in.
I would just put a note in her record saying she hasn't had a book since title x. this was returned to school on y date so should be in their book box or out with another child.

Thanks :) I've had a word with the teacher this morning. i'm just a bit narked that she's gone that long without a book. I know I should have chased it though but I'm still a bit put out...

thing is though like you say you just don't know what the reason might be so how are you supposed to know when to step in and ask.

Can you not supplement with library books in the meantime???

PoppyWearer · 09/07/2013 17:39

Ours have been a bit erratic the last few weeks - I just put it down to so much going on at this time of the term (school trips, sports day, summer fairs, reports, etc) and have been supplementing the reading with books from home.

I don't know about you but my DD is exhausted anyway, so I'm not too worried.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/07/2013 19:30

Yes, thank you, I can supplement with other books and have been doing. That's not the point though.

For the entire school year she has had 3 books a week and returned them on time every day. Now suddenly the book doesn't come back (because we never had it) and it takes them three weeks to notice. That is the point.

This happened to my dd as well. No books for 3 weeks - turned out they thought they gave dd a book on a particular date but she was absent from school that day!! Why they don't just stick a preprinted note in saying please return xxx book where they just have to fill in the book name, I'll never know. Frustrating

Periwinkle007 · 09/07/2013 19:38

must admit we are struggling to get any reading done at all - the bare minimum is being done in this household, and still another 2 weeks of term yet. the kids must be exhausted
