How to identify if a child is coasting ... and what to do about it?

DS is currently in Y4 and just found out his teacher for next year. She is a teacher who has a reputation for allowing (particularly the above average) children to coast in Y5.

Now, I am taking playground gossip with a pinch of salt. But I also want to be alert to the possibility that this may happen next year. Question is, how can I, as a parent, with limited access to what my child is doing at school spot if they are coasting? I would love to sit back and trust the teacher but one too many parent has told me that they did just that and now regret it.
