Phonics Test results date?

wigglywoowoo · 06/07/2013 16:03

Is there a date that we should recieve the results by? We've had the year end reports and other gumpf but not phonics. There is only a week left of school for us and I'm starting to think we wont be getting them.

We got DD's Yr1 report on Friday and the phonics check result was not included, nor were any NC levels. We have a parents evening on Monday and I imagine we will receive the results of the phonics check then.

AuntieStella · 06/07/2013 16:18

Assuming a competent school; they will be looking at which children were identified by the phonics screening as requiring onwards support in the specific skill of decoding, and then working out the shape that support will take, and then telling parents when they are ready with the information to pre-empt the obvious questions.

wigglywoowoo · 06/07/2013 16:22

We don't have any parent/teacher meetings in the summer term. We received NC levels and a descriptive report of dd but I think DD will be a borderline pass so would like to know the result.

It does feel a little like we are running out of time though AuntieStella with only one week left.

This is what the ARA says:

"15.1 Reporting results to parents
Headteachers must report each child?s phonics screening check score to parents by the end of the summer term at the latest. Headteachers should also report whether or not a child has met the standard. The threshold mark will be available in the Scoring guidance, which schools will receive with the check materials.
Headteachers can use their judgement about the best method of communication with parents and may wish to include additional information such as how parents can support their child to progress with their phonics and reading at home."

AuntieStella · 06/07/2013 16:30

Yes, I can see why that would make you feel antsy. And though schools are generally competent, sometimes things do go astray.

They should let you know, and with enough time for any parents to talk to a teacher if they don't know what the screening result will mean for year 2 and beyond (which as it's new, they probably won't, as the helpful cohort of parents with older children who've done it before doesn't yet exist).

Periwinkle007 · 06/07/2013 16:30

we haven't had reports in our school yet. I don't think schools tell you the phonics test results though. I thought they were purely for 'diagnostic' purposes of how the teaching was going and to inform groupings or additional focus help next year. I didn't think they had to tell you because it isn't actually a test of children in the same way as SATS. not sure I am making any sense there and equally I could be completely wrong.

quip · 06/07/2013 16:39

We got phonics and ks1 sats results this week.

mrz · 06/07/2013 16:44

The school must tell you whether your child achieved the expected score or not in the phonics check, they don't have to give you a national curriculum level for any year groups other than Y2 and Y6.

CinemaParadiso · 06/07/2013 16:56

Mrz - are schools obliged to tell parents the actual score? I teach year 1 & our Head has just informed parents whether their child has passed or not and she is not keen on telling parents the scores. A few parents have asked to come & see me & discuss the screening and I suspect they will ask for the scores. I'd like to tell them.

LondonJax · 06/07/2013 17:00

We got our phonics test result last Monday

Elibean · 06/07/2013 17:10

We haven't had reports yet, but I think they're due this week - and I imagine phonics results will be mentioned.

I'm so happy with the way our school managed the test - no fuss, no stress, and I wouldn't have known it had happened if dd hadn't mentioned 'having lots of fun with Miss X today reading silly words'.

mrz · 06/07/2013 17:13

The ARA says "Headteachers must report each child?s phonics screening check score to parents by the end of the summer term at the latest. Headteachers should also report whether or not a child has met the standard."

capercaillie · 06/07/2013 17:18

We got a letter with the phonics result and score in last week.

CrispyFB · 06/07/2013 18:00

I found a letter buried in DD's bookbag this week with the score!

SsimTee · 06/07/2013 18:05

We never got given the actual score. Only whether the child has met the standard or not. I think I will be having a word with the Headteacher on Monday. Will be peed off if it turns out they have to give us the actual score and they didn't.

TheSitChewAceChien · 06/07/2013 18:15

DS' was with his school report. (Not up to standard. Sad, but it wasn't a shock.)

No actual score though, same as yours, Ssim.

lougle · 06/07/2013 18:25

I got a report on Friday, stating:

-DD2's score
-What 'score code' that gave (ie. took the test and met the standard, took the test and did not meet the standard, did not take the test due to absence, was disapplied from the test).
-Statistics within the school broken down into girs and boys for the current year, and the same statistics nationally for 2012.
-The cut off score for 'pass' (32).

It was interesting to see that although the overall pass rate exceeded last year's national pass rate and both boys and girls within the school exceeded last year's national pass rates, only 62% of boys passed within the school this year, compared to 90% of the girls.

I hope the school is going to think about how they tackle that gap. Last year there was an 8% gap between girls and boys nationally. I think that a 28% gap within one school could be significant, unless there are are large number of boys with SN in the cohort.

Periwinkle007 · 06/07/2013 19:09

ah ok - I didn't think they had to tell us. I will look forward to that next year.

wigglywoowoo · 06/07/2013 19:40

Thanks all, if we haven't had the results by Tuesday I will speak to the teacher on Wednesday.

noramum · 06/07/2013 19:55

We got the result Friday, together with the report. We got DD's score and also the school's one, for boys and girls seperately. Also last year's national score for comparison.

We didn't get NC levels but I am not too bothered as I got them in Spring and I can't see DD regressing so I assume all is well.

christinarossetti · 06/07/2013 20:56

Our school mentioned the overall 'pass rate' in the newsletter, although if it hadn't been for MN I would have had no idea that they'd done a screening test as no-one has mentioned it.

Feenie · 06/07/2013 21:19

Schools are obliged to report the actual score:

sittinginthesun · 06/07/2013 21:58

I was given ds2's on the day he did the test. It was a nice little note, with his score hand written in.

finallyasilverlining · 08/07/2013 14:30

Fennie has that always been the case?. I didn't even know anything about Ds having a phonics screening check let alone what his score was. Saying that Ds's school seem to like to keep any info like that a secret as us parents have no right to see how our Dc are doing Confused
