question re phonics screening for Year 2 children

My year 2 son didn't pass the screening last year so now due to take the test again. I asked him today if he had done it and he said no. He said they've been going over the words before the real one next week. I thought all children had to take the test at some time this week or was that just for Year 1.

I get the impression that our school still does not place much importance on a complete phonics approach to reading.

As far as I know there's a 2 week window this year so the screening can be done any time this week or next week. So children on holiday/off sick can be caught next week and schools with a very large cohort have got more time to get through them all. It might be that the school is doing all the year 1s first and then the year 2s afterwards?

Thanks toomuch, that's probably right that Year 1 was this week and then Year 2 next week. From what I gather more than half of Year 2 are sitting the test so it might just be down to numbers as to why they didn't do it this week.

No, the second week is for any children absent - all the Y2s should have been checked this week; OP is right.

In my DC school the yr 2s did their test on Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week was yr1

The statutory guide is very clear on this.

I did our Y2s before play on Monday and Y1s Monday & Tuesday and have 1 absentee to pick up next week when they return from holiday.

That's interesting, thanks all. I'm going to ask why it wasn't done this week. I don't know for sure about all year 2 but have a feeling my son is correct in what he is saying. Does the school have to report the date of he test?

no they don't have to report when the check took place

My year two child did her retest on Tuesday

Feenie · 21/06/2013 20:55

They don't, but schools are moderated by the LEA - and the moderation period lasts up to next Friday. If they get a visit Monday morning, then they will have to explain why they didn't test the Y2s last week as per the rules.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/06/2013 20:56

What happens if they still fail it in Yr 2?

Feenie · 21/06/2013 20:59

The school has to make provision for them - but they don't have to be officially checked again in Y3.

Thanks. Dd failed it by quite a margin in Yr 1 and was re-tested this week. She has come on massively in reading overall during the year so hopefully she will have made the grade this time.

Ok now I'm just a little bit tempted to make a phone call to our LEA on Monday :) . In reality I know I won't and I wonder would they even have the manpower available to check out how a school is administering the screening?
