Tell me about primary schools around Winchester, e.g. St Peter's Catholic Primary School

Struggling to find places for two children. If there are places then there is nothing to rent. If there are nice properties then the school is not good. So I am still browsing admissions numbers for Winchester primary schools. Wonder if St Peter's Catholic Primary School has a catchment area? Is it only for baptized children?

Anyone? Would love to hear opinions on this school such as quality of education and pupil care, school facilities, playground etc. As a Catholic schools would it be overly strict? Thanks!
The Ofsted rated this school as outstanding in 2009 but I cannot find reviews from parents.

St Peter's has a Catholic baptised catchment - across the pastoral are which is Winchester, Colden Common, Alresford etc. It is a lovely school but you'd be lucky to get in if you're not Catholic.
Having said that - all the primaries in Winchester will be fine Smile

Thanks Tommy. I know my children would be bored if the school is overly strict and has poor facilities. Do you know anything about Compton? Is the teaching better there than at St. Peter's? Findmyschool has 5 stars for Compton but only 3 for St. Peter's which is strange.

I only know St Peter's I'm afraid.
I've never heard of "findmyschool" but I'm sure that you probably can't go wrong with Winchester primaries. IME - the best thing you can do is visit the schools and see how you feel about them

grabaspoon · 07/07/2013 23:03

Depends where you'll be living as to catchment

TheSteveMilliband · 07/07/2013 23:06

I thought Compton had a lovely feel when I visited last year. Lots of space, all the children knew each other and all seemed very calm. There really is no such thing as a bad winchester primary though, and agree best thing is to visit. What's important to you might not be to ofsted/other parents.

Here is the link to find my school. Sure the star rating looks wrong.

that's a pretty poor website! Please don't base your school choices on that.... just go and visit all the schools

greenandorange · 07/07/2013 23:17

Thanks Tommy. I should take the time off and see the schools. I have tried to browse Internet to see what parents say about different primary schools in the South of Winchester but unfortunately could not find much information about the above two schools.

that website is based on a 7 year old Ofsted report. Not very reliable at all

Thank you SteveMilliband. Sounds like a good school to me. Well-behaved pupils is a positive sign. Did you see the facilities at school, e.g. learning and the playgrounds?
My DH says we cannot go and see the schools around Winchester as we are a few hours drive just from London and he is busy working.
I know anyone can edit Wikipedia but St. Peter's there is stated as the best school in Winchester. Before reading Wikipedia about Winchester I thought that St. Faith was actually the top one.
My child currently attends an outstanding by Ofsted school. I would not say it is really outstanding but rather very good (in terms of education and pastoral care; the playground is not great either; my child is a bit bored there but for me the most important thing is the quality of teaching then everythting else). Sometimes I think some schools are a little bit overestimated. Do not you think so?

Hi, just found this thread. Have you tried Owslebury Primary? A short drive from Winchester and part of the cluster that includes Compton and Twyford. A really good small primary school to my 3 ... eldest son just leaving for secondary school with amazing results!
