Is this normal Y3 homework?

DC's school has had two recent changes of heads, and lots of complaints about the old homework system, which was basically Letts maths/ comprehension books where they did a small amount each night.

So, now we have a new system, and DD has been asked to produce a play script based on a traditional story. This was handed out on Thursday and is due back in on Monday.

All sounds good. Apart from DD (apparently) hasn't covered play scripts in school and I've had to Google how to produce one, and DD is Dyslexic, so after 30 mins she was exhausted and had only written two scenes. (Scene One, Three bears started eating breakfast, decided to go for a walk while porridge cooled down. Scene Two Goldilocks went for a walk in the forest)

Should we go back and write some more scenes?

DD is on bottom table, if that makes any difference.

I would say that's normal for,year 3 but sounds hard for bottom group children. Personally, I would give more guidance and resources than that for my bottom group. Play scripts have speech so get her to include this in the scenes and so this would be less writing and she might find it easier. I think two scenes would be enough for homework.

30 mins a week for literacy homework is OK then? The DC will get a certificate if they complete every homework between now and the end of term, and I don't want DD missing out because we didn't spend hours producing this.

DS (Y3) has had to finish a play script before, but the first half dozen lines were already there so they had a model to work from (and they definitely had covered play scripts in school beforehand).

Has she never done a nativity play or anything at school? I think at this age mine had been introduced to play scripts in ths way - not a formal lesson on scripts, but discussion while learning lines. Also some of the reading scheme books were plays. I used to read them as a parent helper with bottom set year 2s so that might be how the children have covered them.

I think 30 minutes is sufficient for homework if that is the school policy. I think officially mine has 6 pieces of 20 minutes plus spellings in year 3, but rarely spends that long.

My DD is in Y3. I doubt she could do more than your's has done.

Not normal for my year 3 but have minimal/ no homework and occasional [termlyish] project which is often arty farty pain in the bum.

My dc1 is in yr3. Each week spellings are sent home as well as 2 sides of math work (A4 size) and a piece of literacy which is usually composition based like play scripts etc. Literacy work is expected to be at least one side of A4.

It is much more than my DD would be given. bough the homework is quite open ended and I expect some might do something like this off their own bat. MY DD could not and would do as yours has done, and with a lot of help.

Ha! My DD has just been given writing a playscript for HW this week.
