In year admissions advice

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear the result of an in year admissions application? (I have applied to our current LEA for admissions in another LEA)

If any child doesn't get into the chosen school will they automatically get put on the waiting list or will I need to ask for them to be put on it?

I have only applied to 1 school will the LEA offer an alternative to any child who doesn't get a place?
