Home work in what year

Hi All,

My DD is in reception she gets 1 or 2 books home once a week for reading. There no other homework. She is enjoying herself and at the same time we think she is learning, fairly good at maths... Working out the difference between ages within family, friends etc..

My friends daughter goes to a private school and it seems she does get a lot of homework (30 mins) and at least 1 book everyday. Is this normal? Are we missing something? Should we support her more get some books home... Buy download some worksheets etc..

Ours never had reception homework except for reading whenever they liked. They do have special 'homework' books which their parents can put in any photos/writing/maths work etc. the parents/children would like the teachers to see which I think is nice.

I'd just go with whatever your DD wants to do. Mine loved workbooks which she took in to show her teacher, loved doing book reports etc.

Mine get reading books 3 times a week and homework at the weekend - it's usually easy stuff and takes around ten mins, recent ones have been: write the numbers 1-10 and then double them, write a sentence about what you did in the holiday, find and draw a sphere/ cylinder/ cube in your house.

Enjoy the break, once they start formal homework it'll keep on coming - mine would be way too tired to do it midweek!

My reception dd gets 2 reading books per week and a list of 4 spellings to learn. She also has a phonics book to practice writing her letters in, but there's no time pressure to get it done.

DD is in reception.

reading book changed as often as it is read. So It coudl be up to 5 books a week,
Usually two other pieces of homework each weekend.

we get up to 3 reading books a week and something in the way of phonics/spelling type work but it is about 10 minutes worth.

also show and tell, they can take in toys but I tend to make her think of something more interesting or make a little collage/poster/write with some pictures or something different.

ACTUAL work probably takes a total of 10 mins a day (including reading) but work plus tantrum tends to take substantially longer....

DD's primary:
Only reading books in reception, changed 1-2 times per week, if they've been read.
Y1 ditto.
Y2 ditto plus spellings
Proper hw only starts in juniors.

Reception - a new book everyday plus from Autumn term a weekly homework task which took 15 minutes on average. It was often something about what they did in school that week. "Look for shapes in your home and write them down", "draw a picture of a jungle animal and label it", "what is your favourite book and draw a picture of a scene".

Year 1 - daily book until Spring term, since then 3 books per week (Mo/Wed/Fri), weekly homework up to 30 min where they have to recount something they did at school "describe what happens when we did such and such experiment", "what was your favourite thing on the school trip and why" or they had to research "find out 3 things about Tchaikowsky", "interview an adult about their seaside holidays and ask them these questions".

We also get a math sheet each term and have to finish it at the end of the term. Normally 10 tasks and they take 15-30 min but are often games so we played them more often when DD loved it.

They also got a holiday task in preparation for the next term/half-term topic. Maybe 1/2 day and often craft idea.

No spelling at all.
