I'm sure there was a site on the internet to find out the local school / catchments etc, but cant find it. Is there a site or was I dreaming?

Also try your council website.

don't know where you live but I had to phone the education dept of the council - no-where was written where the school catchments started and ended.
I think it's because they can change depending on how many children are in the locality each year IYSWIM

DFES website under school league tables - you can put in your postcode and it comes up with list of schools in order of distance from your house. You can then follow links to results and ofsted reports.
