It's such a shame that it's at the very beginning of a new academic year. It's such an important time of the year - new classroom, new table system, new teacher, new routines, rules and objectives.

My dc primary school sends out a letter saying ten days a year will be authorised ( as long as its not for dance completions) and not during sats. No mention of any exceptional circumstances.
The school although rated highly by Ofsted is in a " deprived" area and I think the head understands many children will not have a family holiday at all if they don't go in term time because of the higher costs in the holidays.

Our HT uses her discretion to authorise up to 10 days per year. Whether or not the holiday is authorised depends on many factors including the reasons given for it being during term time, the time of year, the likelihood of it becoming a 'routine request' and other 'educational risk factors' associated with the family.

No leave for holidays is authorised in September or the weeks leading up to and including SATs week.
