We've just had DS2's 2 year check, and the HV also commented on DS1. He was 4 last month, and starts in reception in September.
Give him a pen, and he will hold it correctly, but just scribble on the page. Never seen a "drawing" from him - not even a face or stick man.
If he is in the right mood, he can attempt to colour. Can't really form any letters (been suggesting he writes his 4 letter name on cards etc).
HV has told me I need to get him drawing properly and forming letters before he goes to school.
Is she over egging things? And if not, how do I encourage a child who would rather be riding his bike, climbing the furniture, or pretending to be a lion than sat drawing or colouring to do just that?

Cheers

DS is 4 next month. He can write his name and some other letters and in the last month or so has started bringing home recognisable drawings of monsters and smiley faces from preschool.

He really can't hold a pencil properly though. He is very easily put off if he finds something difficult so I'm making nothing of it at the moment.

Mrz thank you so much....very reassuring!

A just-4? Not much.

Starting reception I'd be more than happy as the teacher to see an egg with stick arms, legs, face. You're doing quite well to get significantly more than that to start with.

Those links that mrz posted are fascinating - those 'tadpole people' are exactly how my ds draws.

I love the links Mrz posted, fascinating to see the order they develop everything in.

DS is 5.7 and started reception in September. He didn't draw and didn't write. Now 2.5 terms in he is doing lovely detailed drawings (not a great deal if artistic talent but plenty of effort in translating his thoughts to paper) and he's doing fully joined up cursive writing. I want worried when he started and I'm now astounded.

My DD has just turned 4, she has been drawing quite detailed people for some time and trying to write letters (which have now started to look like letters rather than hundreds of vertical lines on the paper Smile), will draw dogs, trains, cats, houses, flowers but sometimes has to tell you what they are before you realize what they are Grin . She just loves drawing, but then we are never short of arty stuff in our house I'm secretly addicted to colourful things. Grin
