Read Write Inc books

Just after any help... Ds1 is 6 in year 1 and on read write inc books. The rest of his class are on ort books. He was put on read write inc as he was really struggling with phonics. He's now on purple read write inc books. I have spoken to his teacher so I know he is behind in class and I want to help him as much as I can. We read every night his reading book plus a bedtime story. Does anyone know what level is purple, I think from speaking to his teacher this is foundation reading not key stage 1. What can I do to help him more. Thanks for any help[smile]

What you need to do is make sure that what you are doing in the evening is actually helping him and is complementing what he is doing in school. RWI is a very structured process and pupils can make very good and rapid progress on it but everything needs to follow the same process.
I would not be too concerned about which book they are on, I would be more concerned that they are making rapid progress, which will allow him to catch up to the others in class.

The purple level is the second level of seven in the RWI phonics books (green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, blue, grey) and the books covers the sounds m - a - s - d - t - i - n - p - g - o - c - k - u - b - f - e - l - h - sh - r - j - v - y - w - th - z - ch - qu - x - ng ? nk,

I would suggest you get the Read Write Inc. Home Phonics Flashcards (these are the home version of the Speed Sounds Cards the school will use). You can use these to help your son learn the sounds he may be struggling with, and how to blend the sounds to read words. The pack has helpful hints for how to help your child.

It might also be worth getting the Home More Phonics Flashcards (Set 2) that include the harder sounds that you son will need to master as he moves through the later book levels.

Is he being taught using the RWI programme or is the school using the books as stand alone

He did the red ditty books and then the green books. I've been told that as he struggled with ort books they got in these books for him and other child who is also struggling. They also got the teachers tutoring books??? and let me photocopy the pages. He has a teacher to teach him and other child and has 1-1 reading (and work from the tutoring book) with this teacher each day.

According to the WRI correlation chart (which you can google) purple is equivalent to the national book band level 'blue' (so roughly a 1C national curriculum level I think?).

We are also doing RWI 121 tutoring daily with a few Y1 and Y2 children (on about the same level as your ds). They are assessed on a special assessment sheet and follow a 121 tutoring scheme (with special books).

I can't say how effective the 121 tutoring is, as we've only just started doing it , but it is an intensive 10-15 mins each day. They read sounds, concentrating on those they have trouble with, read sounds in the books and green words and red words. They read the RWI reading book three times - to decode the words and to read with expression. At the end of each book, they have a short, specific book-based assessment.

Thank you so much for all the replies. Maybe he's not a far behind as I thought. Thanks Scatter I will look into the flashcards, he's ok with the letters but can struggle with blending words.

we have the flashcards - or one of the sets of them, the one with ai, ie, igh in it. they are very good. we bought them after a friend suggested them when my daughter knew the initial sounds but I didn't know how to teach her these ones and she was ready to learn them. She likes the pictures on them.

I think blending is just practice practice practice. We struggled with it due to dyslexia tendancies and as a result she tended to learn the words instead which made it difficult to then concentrate on blending but with practice and also showing her how words separate out (I wrote them out on paper and then cut them into sections and that really helped her visualise the word breaking down)

the ORT Biff Chip and Kipper books are completely different to phonics so I am not surprised a child learning through phonics will struggle with them. Much better to stick with the one approach and once he gets to grips with it he will probably suddenly start to improve. It doesn't matter if they are foundation level at the moment, I think many of the phonics are generally classed as foundation level because that is when the majority of them are introduced to the children but it is all important groundwork.
