My son has been assessed at level 6 in english and level 5c in maths. He's 8, soon to be 8yrs old. Does this sound about right for his age? How do I support him further so that he does the best he can when he gets the real test in yr 6? and websites???

Is the six for reading or writing? Either extremely unusual at the age of 8, or soon to be 8.

Is your child currently in year 4 if he is nearly 9? If so I am at a loss as to why you are thinking about this now?

If your child is a level 6 at 9 years old, he is extremely advanced. Presumably he is on the gifted and talented register, and receiving an individual programme of learning in English? His teacher is the best person to ask about how you can support him.

There's no way you couldn't have some inkling of any of this by now!

this sort of thread is why people who ask genuine questions about childrens progess and levels get flamed so much on here - it should be clear by now what the expected levels are (presumable Y4?).

Surely you have spoken to the teacher and know whether your children is average, above or below by now. If not speak to the teacher and ask what support you can give him.

I honestly can't see what people who start threads like this are trying to achieve. Why is it important to you that some complete strangers tell you on an internet forum that your child is advanced when a 30 second google (or four years' of parents evenings given he is in y4) would tell you the answer to your question?

Have to agree Lego -though my ex husband has had to have it explained to him every year without fail that NC curriculum levels don't mean that if for example they get a 4c in Yr 4, it doesn't mean that they are at the low end of achievement for yr4!

Whilst I think OP must be aware that she has a very bright child, I do think the whole "levels" thing is very confusing to parents (I've picked it up from MN, but never had it properly explained by a school).
