Reception Maths and English

Hi everyone, hope you're all well. (i tried looking for a prev thread, hope its not been done before.)

I've been researching at what level of maths, reading and writing my DD 5 in reception should be at.
I'm using counters with her to count, and do sums. Are there other ways to help so theres a variety?
With writing, i get her to write how her day was (occasionally) but she usually gets her book out and write so i don't usually push too much
Readingwise, she usually reads every couple of days and i read to her every eve

Just wanted to know, usually where should children be when going into year 1.

I think in Y1 it's counting backwards from 20, number bonds to 20 and halving and doubling, adding and subtracting up to 20. Lots of Reception children can already do that and more. I don't think great strides are expected of them. There was a thread posted a while ago where a girl had written

The prinsess marreed her prins. But shee did not now wich prins and then a dragon took the wich away

or somesuch and one of the teachers said that would have been a story to be proud of in Reception. I can't comment on your daughter's reading because I don't know how she does it, but you probably have some idea of how well she's doing it.

Overall I get the impression that Y1 is where expectations are put on the children. I didn't see much sign of them in YR.

my daughter is in reception. we don't do any maths at home unless she requests to do a bit in the holidays. She reads every day and she sometimes writes something to go with Show and Tell stuff or she writes things herself randomly but we don't do any more than that.

My DD is also in reception and we don't do any maths at home either (unless she wants to).

This week she has been learning to count in 2s and 3s.

She writes most days and does get writing homework from school (and spellings).

Reading wise she reads every day (to me or herself).

I volunteer in a reception class (not at my DC school) and the teacher today said she aims for getting them to yellow level (or above) by the end of the year.

Forgot to say DD does adding/subtracting to 20, counting backwards from 20 in reception.

But she probably didn't say how disappointed or otherwise she is if they're not on yellow by the end of the year. I don't think our Reception class even aims for yellow or anything like it. I get the impression a book with words in is doing well.

All she said was that all the kids in the class have made progress and she is happy with that.

The whole class is formally assessed at the beginning of every term (then continuously iyswim).

Try searching for the Early Learning Goals, which set out quite clearly what is expected by the end of reception. Someone (mrz maybe?) linked to them in a thread recently but I can't find it now.
