Y1 homework: "make a toy"

So DD has been given homework, which is to think about a toy she can make, on her own, at school next week. There's no further guidance, other than that she has to take all the things she will need to accomplish this task into school in a named carrier bag on Monday.

Argh!

Anyone got any bright ideas on what she could make? She's already made shakers, sock puppets and glitter shaky bottle things this year, so something different would be good.
I've got a decent amount of "stuff" around the house she can use, but very limited chances to get out and acquire anything extra (unless I go Monday morning and drop it into school late). Help!

what about a wooden spoon person/'doll'? Wooden spoon, wrap pipecleaners around for the arms, stick wool or something fuzzy to make the hair, draw on face.

I suppose it depends on how much time the school is giving them to make it.

when you say she has already made the other toys, do you mean at home or school? if school don't know, don't tell them and she can expand on an idea she has already made. or have you got any wooden clothes pegs for a little peg dolly. a box dolls house? a shoe box would do, she could decorate the outside, stick in material for carpet and paper for wallpaper and then make some furniture with little boxes, cardboard, thread bobbins etc.

Sock puppet.

1 x sock
1 x pair of googly eyes
assorted bits of fuzzy felt/stickers
1 x glue stick

Even DS could manage that!

No, she's done the things I mentioned at school, not at home. Else I'd be sending her with an old sock and some stuff to stick to it!

The box dolls house could work, I've not got the proper peg dolly type pegs but I have got some wooden pegs that might work.

The puppet idea could work too, if I can dig out a suitable wooden spoon that's not got curry stains all over it :o or one of those pop up puppet things in the plastic cups.

I have no idea how much time she'll have to make it, they didn't see fit to tell us that - which would help, as 30 minutes is a lot different to having a whole morning or day!

Thanks, you've given me some ideas I can talk to her about tomorrow before we cobble something together for her to take in on Monday.

Pinhole camera.

Kills two birds with one stone - the toy is made and she learns how the eye works (well, some of it).

Plus, she looks really clever.

Dead easy to make - long cardboard box, 1 x piece of tracing paper, 1 x piece of black paper/thickish card, 1 x pin, sticky tape.

All you then need is a bright light source with a clear 'shape' to it. An old-fashioned filament bulb will do.

Jack in the box? You can teach her to make the spring bit at home- get to long strips of thin card, stick together at one end at right angles to each other in an L configuration then fold the bottom one straight down over the top one then repeat with the other strip, keep folding one over the other until you've used up all the card and stick together at the other end. It's like a concertina, when its all pushed together you can stick one end in a box and some sort of paper character on the other end.... Ok probably that wasn't a marvellous explanation!!

Y1 Dd had to make a transformer at school. She made a unicorn - so a horse with a pin tie through it so you could move the horn up to make a unicorn and back down to a horse.

Very simple, but she could do it all herself Smile

Flick - no, the instructions she was given say we are to discuss it with her and help her come up with ideas of things to make. There were also two worksheets to complete, one done by her and one done by a parent...

I hate parental homework! I left school years ago, I don't need more...

DD went through a serious dragon phase, and made an entire herd of them from pipecleaners - one in a figure of eight for the wings, then body made from part of another with various refinements. In fact IIRC she made all sorts of animals from them (plus a nativity scene including very small beige pipecleaner baby Jesus with halo, should you ever need a Christmas craft option!)
