Punctuation - when do they start to learn it?

DS is in the equivalent of Year R (not UK). As a class they haven't learnt all the letters yet (although genius boy child is way a head of course).

Anyway DS comes home and tells me all about full stops and speech maks etc. I think it is brilliant but don't know if this is the norm in UK. Just curious.

dd2 definitely learned full stops in Reception, along with question marks and exclamation marks. I think she had a general idea of speech marks and commas, but is going over them again in Y1.

Yep DD has learnt punctuation in reception (but possibly because she has asked). She has learnt about capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks, speech marks and speech/think bubbles...

Year R for full stops, finger spaces, capital letters, recognising speech in text, contractions (apostrophe represents these letters), etc.

Year 1 for story structures such as openers, teasers, cliffhangers, etc.

My daughter is starting to learn it in pre school. Inasmuch as they make a point of pointing capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks out at story time and my daughter tells me in the books we read what they are. She knows names start with a capital letter and will do this when writing. Obviously not into full on prose yet but the question is when do they start to learn.

DS1 is learning punctuation in year R, he did know some before starting school though.

yep definitely in reception. They have to understand basic punctuation for reading.

My reception daughter loves using apostrophes when something belongs to someone. I think it makes her feel grown up.

Can I just ask Op if you mean when they are writing or reading? DD in r has happily pointed out full stops, CL, exclamation and question marks, speech marks, speech and think bubbles for ages and understands the use of elipsis (spelling?) and says "dot, dot, doooooot!!" to great dramatic effect in her reading - think the sloth/belt character in The Croods. However, I doubt if she is using ALL of that in her independant writing.

DD has just started talking about full stops and capital letters. She is Reception. I am extending her learning by pointing out exclamation marks, question marks and speech marks !

She will be absolutely sure on when to use and, importantly, when not to use the possessive apostrophe in no time !

Knowing about them and using them accurately are two different things sobs a previous y3/4 teacher who was still pointing out missing full stops!

I think the 'norm' (in non MN world) is just capital letters and full stops by the end of reception writing wise (although obviously all children will be at different stages).

DD is y1 but in the top y2 literacy group and can now use capitals, full stops, commas, speech marks, brackets pretty consistently and has a good go at apostrophes. She's just learning about paragraphs I think.

They will be taught about all kinds of punctuation, but as Awizardsstaffhasaknobontheend says, knowing and using correctly are very different things. In reception he would be expected to somethines use capital letters and full stops correctly (minimum expectation).

That's great his teacher is pointing out all those things. Hope they cover all the letters soon . My kids like learning about punctuation and once you start writing you need to know and use it. DS is unusual in Y1 in that he uses speech marks in his writing correctly. I wish he would use captital letters more consistently .
