What age do you think this book is suitable for?

I don't mean in terms of reading ability or the ability to understand the book but purely on the subject matter?

9 year old DD loved it and proclaimed it her favourite ever book when she read it, a few months back. She might have been 8 then, or possibly just 9.

Mine has read it at least once a year since she was 7. Seen film and play (bit rude !!). It is her favourite book ever

Oh and she's 11 now. Loves the sequel too.

Around 8 or 9,but children vary so much that it will be variable, says the person who read catcher in the rye at 12 and loved it.

Thanks, my 8 year wants to read it and I wasn't sure what age it was aimed at. What is the sequel called please?

the sequel is called Farm Boy

My DS has read this book and he hates it with a vengence. So not all DC will be necessarily in the wonderful acclaiming it camp.

DW and I after having given DS this book on recommendation, ( thinking it was wonderful with its rave reviews) also read it. My DW also hates it. I think , there are better story subjects for DC. As an adult it is not a book I would personally choose toread either.

Farm boy reads as a much simpler book than War horse IMO, I gave Farm boy to younger nephew and war horse to elder, when they were 10 & 12. I had read both and had a vague idea of the boys respective reading abilities

We tend to find Morpugo turgid & dry, Warhorse is an exception, though, we all liked.
I suppose ok down to 7yo (very mature 7 with good comprehension skills and reading stamina, mine weren't like that) but best for age 10+.

I read ths to dd. she was 7 and enjoyed it. We havent seen the Film yet, but have booked the play for later in the year.

Bit concerned to read its rude.. In what way?

There is quite a lot of swearing in the play. They do say its not recommended for under 12s, and we took ours at 10 & 12, which was just about OK (we smiled with them at the rude words). There is also quite a bit in French & German so might need to explain a bit to 7 year old. However, the puppetry is amazing, the acting amazing and the goose is cool. We all cried buckets at the interval.

Wow - I saw the play and think under 12s would find it difficult and upsetting. Book not as upsetting but I think he wrote it for secondary school children.
