DS2 does well in spelling tests, but in written work spelling is awful

When the focus is on spelling, he gets 9/10 or 10/10 most weeks. This is with little preparation TBH.

In his written work, he makes loads of mistakes even on easy words. e.g littel, gole, fier. He also still gets some letters backwards, again in a piece of writing e.g if you asked him to write bed, he'd get it right, but if he was writing a story about a magic bed, be might write beb/deb

He's yr5 and although his reading is good now (reading age 13 at last test), he was a very slow starter and his yr2 teacher thought he should be tested for dyslexia. It's never been mentioned since though.

Is this normal, or should I be asking for some support for him?

Sounds a lot like my DS who has dyslexia. He too is a good reader and has excellent comprehension but he makes little, subtle mistakes. It may well be that your DS is not far enough behind to qualify for extra help at school. There are spelling programmes out there that you could try (Alpha to Omega, Word Wasp etc) but in my experience, there are no quick fixes.
