Opinion on writing level (again - sorry!)

DS is in Year 2 in an independent school. They don't do SATS but instead do nationally standardised tests in Maths and English (i.e. reading & comprehension) twice a year. But they don't formally assess writing as such, which I suspect is DS's weakest point.

Would someone mind hazarding an opinion as to what SATS level his writing (below) might equate to? It was written entirely unaided at home (I didn't even know he was doing it) and reproduced faithfully with his original punctuation.

(By the way, Spyro, Tree Rex and Grenade Generals are characters in his favourite game of Skylanders, and Series 2 and Giants are further developments in the Skylanders range!)

He wrote:

The big battle. Once the Skylanders, giants and sieres 2 figurs were patatrolling skylands and got ambusht by a troll army. So spyro sieres 2 spyro and tree rex said "fite" tree rex said it to the giants spyro said it to the skylanders and sires 2 spyro said it to the sieres 2 skylanders . There was a biff and a bang comeing from evry dierecsion. Finerlel all that were left was 3 ganaid generrals tree rex spyro and seires 2 spyro chareged at them then tree rex did an elbow drop spyro and series two spyro did an ground pound. The end. Ps the skylander and giants and series 2 skylanders won.

I assume he has finger spaces, captical letters and full stops. Most the words have been spelt in a phonically plausible way and I can follow his story. I have no idea what level it is but his writing is better than a lot of children of his age.

Depends on handwriting, but 2b?

jgjgjg · 08/03/2013 17:06

Hi

Yes there are finger spaces and (mostly) capital letters as per the way I typed it out.

Okay so if 2b maybe he's not as weak as I thought. Perhaps I'll repost in Primary Education for more opinions.

Thanks

Sorry ignore me, of course this IS the primary education section!

Would definitely welcome more opinions though.

Only connective used to join clauses is and; only time connective used to open a sentence is finally. I would probably err on the side of caution and go for 2c, but I can see why LoopdeLoops went for 2b. To progress I'd be looking for some of: adjectives or other descriptive language; ? ! or commas in lists; because (or other connectives such as so, but, or) to join clauses; greater use of pronouns and some different ways of starting sentences. BUT - it is impossible to level a child's writing based on 1 piece - we used a number of pieces in a range of genre produced over a period of time. On my (somewhat limited experience) I would say that's fairly typical for an average year 2 child at this stage of the year. Happy to be proved wrong by other posters...
