Hi. We have a new HT who has asked me to plan our school Easter service with y5 and 6, so that they will plan it, lead it, do the readings etc. I am to take next Monday to do it. The service will be about 30 minutes and held in the village church (so no ICT). It is a church school.

I have some ideas - I wondered about maybe basing to on Lord of The Dance, using verses in sections to tell the story - but I am hoping that the collective world on MN could give me some ideas about suitable readings, songs, hymns, activities, etc, which might be far better than mine.

We once got the children to write the readings. They had to pretend they were different people in each section of the story and write their eye witness view of what happened and include their feelings on what was going on. I think we split it into

Palm Sunday: a disciple and a person in the crowd
turning over the tables in the temple: a trader
last supper: John and Judas
arrest of Jesus and Peter's denial: Roman Soldier and Peter
trial: Pontius Pilate and person in the crowd
crucifixion: Soldier and MAry, the mother of Jesus
EAster Sunday: Mary

They also wrote prayers.

There were hymns which may have included:
We have King who rides a donkey
There is Green Hill
From heaven you came
Alleluia alleluia give thanks to the Risen Lord
Lord of the Dance.

We did something similar, the LA children who didn't want to write painted a picture to represent each scene which we attached to the back of a box. As each section was read ou,t the boxes were attached together with the back and picture facing the audience and theboxes built into a cross ( we used bulldog clips to clip the boxes together. The cross was over 6 foot tall when we finished!
