Hi my ds does not enjoy writing at all and it is a struggle to get him to do any Nevertheless I am trying to help him at home. I was wondering if he has made any progress since September. It is short and sweet. Many thanks.

Once upon a time there was a Dragon he was calld Dragoney. He was brav and red like figher(fire). Sudunly there was a dasling night(knight) in armer(armour). The Dragon brevd(breathed) some flaming figher (fire) at the night(knight) in armer and then he was ded (dead). The end.

This is exact, is it? It's his capitalisation and punctuation? How old is he? If he's pretty young then it's pretty good. I think we could have understood it without interpretations and adults being able to understand the work without the child's help is one of the rules of judging.

1a+/2c depending on other evidence. I like it by the way.

He is in yr 2, just turned 7 last week. His teacher said he is behind with his writing last year, so I was just wondering he is a long way behind or catching up a little. Thanks for your comments learnandsay & Djwkin.

His teacher keeps drilling full stops and capital letters so perhaps it is sinking in !

He's got full stops, capital letters and more. He has adjectives, he has a different sentence starter (suddenly) and a simile thrown in too. That's quite a lot for such a short piece. I think he's doing really well and definitely catching up.

Would have levelled this as a 2c if there was more of it. Just not enough evidence to make a full judgement. There are beginnings of higher level writing so lots of potential and progress can be made with the right teaching and support. Hope that makes sense.
