Good first chapter books for 6 yr old

My DS (6 and in Y2) has just started to 'get' reading.
He has always loved being read to and is just beginning to understand that reading can be fun rather than a chore.

He is on ORT level 6 (orange band) and I would love to get him some books that he could read at home (with or without me).

Does anyone have any recommendations of what to start with? Thanks

We started with some of the easier roald dahl ones.... The twits or georges marvellous medicine ....i enjoyed reading them again as much as ds did

The Viking Vik series is good.

Horrid henry early readers are a hit with my 6 year old D's.

My 6 year old has just got it too, and asked for these

DD is 5 and in Yr 1. Roald Dahl has some easier reads and Allan Ahlberg's Gaskitt books are excellent. DD has had some Red Bananas books home from school, which were also very good. One of her very favourite books was was Julia Donaldson's 'The Giants and the Joneses' and was a big hit with DH too.

Would second Horrid Henry and Roald Dahl (maybe The Magic Finger is a good one to start).

DD loved the Frog and Toad books and the Mercy Watson books.

My DS likes the magic tree house series, plus early horrid Henry readers, plus Jill Tomlinson books - the owl who was afraid of the dark etc, and the usborne first readers too - usborne has a great range of books for all levels.

I would go for Usborne Young readers. My DD loves them and they are a good mix of text and pictures.

Second - Magic treehouse series - has very well-controlled language.

Horrid Henry, Flat Stanley, Magic Treehouse. Some Roald Dahl. Maybe try non-fiction and poetry too.

He probably wouldn't like Rainbow Magic quite as much as DD does :o

Wonderful memories of Flat Stanley, Roald Dahl, Frog and Toad... but also seek out - on Amazon if necessary - other Arnold Lobel titles - Mouse Tales and Owl at Home. Blissful After this, the world's their oyster.

Beast quest. Very formulaic but much loved by my boys!

The only thing I would say about Flat Stanley (my DD is on ORT10/11) and she found it tough because of the "Americanisms" ie sidewalk etc and there was one pic of FS being posted into a postbox and she kept insisting it was a bin

DD also liked the Morris the Cat chapter books and I know they are not chapter books but I would seriously look into the Happy Families books (Mr Creep the Crook etc) they are fab!!

Early readers Horrid Henry brilliant. Also we have the Beano subscription delivered weekly, which DS loves.

Secret Seven is currently very popular in our house.

Oliver Moon has just gone down well with my 5 nearly 6 yr old and some Winnie the Witch books are available as chapter books. We also love the Usbourne Young Readers series..

Horrid Henry is good, but maybe not the best role model (or maybe DS's behaviour/humour would have evolved that way anyway?!).
My DS (6) likes Dinosaur Cove series, Astrosaurs series and a series of books for children by Alexander Mcall Smith (eg the Banana Machine).
