My 8 year olds reading

Does anyone know how they test a childs reading in primary schools in Shropshire? I am having to keep going up to school regarding my childs reading. My child reads to me with confidence and is fluent, my child even sits and reads on her own, so I feel she is a confident reader. I feel my childs books are not challenging enough at school! Any advice?

Get your child books yourself from local library; and ask if he/she can bring in own book for reading time. Don't the kids chose whatever they read? Getting the School to agree with you route is long and tiresome.

Schools often have different reading goals from parents. So their choice of books for the pupil is not exactly wrong, it's just different. If the teacher believes that her book is the right book there's not much the parent can do about it.

Books they bring home aren't meant to challenge, they are confidence builders to reinforce skills.

Do you mean the books they bring home from school are not challenging?

I'd ask if there are particular things you can work on. If your child is a fluent reader the emphasis is more on comprehension - do they understand plot development, different characterisation, why particular language is used, inference etc?

our school brings home a level or two lower than the read in school. i agree if they are boring go to the library but if she is ok reading them and reading lots of extra as well i wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you for advice. My child does find the books boring, not really stories that she likes to read, and so because of this their attention drops. Think I will just let her carry on reading her favourite books at home and get plenty more for her to read. My chid is very good at understanding comprehension, plot development, and is very imaginative to even change the endings or plots.
My child cannot choose their own books in school, because she not classsed as they say ' a free reader' which also frustrates her, she likes to choose her owns books.

As previous posters have said, provide her with more stimulating books yourself, try the library or the book people. Lovereading4kids is a good website for inspiration. Was in the same position last year. School policy was that the next level content was unsuitable she made great progress no thanks to school. Schools are very funny about reading levels..... So just managed it myself. Good luck

Thank you for website will have a look. She loves reading and looking at books and magazines, so will just keep her interest up at home. Will let school carry on what they are doing and concentrate on what she enjoys reading at home!
