How can I help my 8 yr old DS to learn spelling

DS is in middle school where they no longer do spelling lists and tests. In his infant school, the same approach was taken. They are now expected to learn spelling by reading and writing in the normal course.

However, despite DS being very capable in all areas at school, his spelling is lousy. I know that reading lots will help, but surely actually LEARNING how to spell words is the way to go?

TIA.

My son also was a poor speller, despite being a very capable student in most other areas. Last year, his teacher suggested he have some "special lessons" to help with spelling. The learning support teacher used a program called Nessy which my son loved. I think it's designed for children with dyslexia (which my son does not have) and it seems to be very effective. My son's spelling improved significantly. He still makes mistakes in his writing, mainly because he rushes and doesn't check his work, but when I remind him to check he usually can spot and correct his mistakes. I think Nessy is available on-line or you can buy CD-roms. They also have a typing programme which we bought and which also is very effective. Good luck!

Thanks, Posadas! I will look into that.
