What is the difference between the same level in KS1 & KS2

I've just found out that my DS (10 and in Year 5) hasn't progressed at all, in 2 school years, based on his levels.

In Year 2 SATS he got 2c, 2b, 2b and 2a in Maths

At the end of Year 4 the only difference was in Maths and he got a 3c

I've been told the levels may be the same,but they mean different things in different Key Stages - what does this actually mean and what can I ask the school for?

I don't understand how the school can get away with no progress over 2 years. Afaik they have to show progression between the levels and the difference between KS1 & KS2 is a red herring. Ask them how they are going to achieve this. Ofsted would ask them the same and would expect them to have plan in place.

We had exactly the same with DD who made no progress from Y3 to Y5, we fought and fought to get them to recognise this and now finally in Y6 she's moving up the levels. But they weren't very keen.

They should mean the same thing - KS1 use school wide assessment procedures to assess children in Y2.

Did he go to a separate infant school? There can sometimes be a disparity where a different infant school hasn't got good moderation procedures.

How are the school dealing with this lack of progress - what measures are they putting in place to address it?

It sounds like a regular thing then. Because i'm not as clued up (educationally) as other parents. I haven't even been questioning them. All reports have said he's working at age related levels

DS has been at the same school all through - the only difference is at the end of Year 2 children leave the site of Infants and move across the road to the Juniors - so in a way, yes it's different but not sure how that would effect it.

He's been on SA+ for almost a year and at thats when they put the literacy/numeracy intervention in, according to them. I have no reason to think they're not being truthful.

It shouldn't affect anything - they should be using whole school moderation. Don't let them use the different levels/key stage thing to fob you off; it's a myth, and was only relevant pre 2005 when KS1 assessment was just the tests. Now that it's teacher assessment only they have to use whole school assessment procedures - which mean just that!

Thanks feenie I'll remember that for future meetings. If they've put things on place yet he's still not tigresses in two years then there's either a "blockage" somewhere and he needs a statement or they need to put more in place for him. Either way I'm not really happy.
