I say test but probably assessment would be better

Dd had to go in pairs to different teacher and read a list of words.
Have managed to weed out she read
Wet of girl boy it there and their he some amongst lots of others.
Was this a test? I asked if there were any made up words thinking they were practising for phonics test. But there weren't.

She got a sticker which is the only reason I know it happened otherwise I'm pretty clueless about her day.

If wet could possibly be went then it sounds more like HFW than the phonics test

Startail · 20/12/2012 09:52

Reading age?
We went to the HT and did these at primary.

DD1s done various read bits and answer questions tests for the same reason.

learnandsay · 20/12/2012 09:55

Can't the normal class teacher test for HFW?

Shattereddreams · 20/12/2012 13:44

HFW at school is the 'old' list. I know her target for end of year is to spell last years 45 words, which she can.
They are pretty old school, aren't learning any new phonics this year or breaking up into phonics groups or anything. But she can read very well so not overly bothered by that.

I was curious as to what they were doing, and her teacher is a disinterested supply teacher so hence asking here.

Of course the normal class teacher can test HFW but as it needs to be done 1-1 who teaches the rest of the class while she/he works with each child?

mrz · 20/12/2012 17:11

It could be a word reading test (giving a reading age but those words aren't in any version I'm familiar with)

whomovedmychocolate · 20/12/2012 17:12

Was it just her that was tested. At our school sometimes the trainee teachers practice testing Y1 with various old tests just to get the experience of doing the test IYSWIM.

Shattereddreams · 20/12/2012 21:04

Whole class, probably alphabetically from what she describes!
Thought it was a bit strange. And she said all the words were ones she knew, if you we're going to do a reading age test, wouldn't you progress to harder words until child could no longer read them? Doesn't seem to be the case.

It sounds very like a HFW assessment given that they aren't teaching phonics

rrbrigi · 21/12/2012 11:34

Hi,

I think it could be the Burt Reading Test.

This is a line from the test:

went boys that girl water

Feenie · 21/12/2012 11:38

I doubt it - it isn't suitable for children under 6 years and 3 months, so isn't necessarily the best choice for Y1 children.

mrz · 21/12/2012 16:22

and the Burt test doesn't include the words it, there, their or boy
