Book on evolution for 6yo

Can anyone recommend any suitable books for a 6 year old to counteract the creationist point of view she's being taught in school.

My dd had the childrens book of earth and space encylopedia. Has all about how the earth was formed, what was under the crust and how we came about. a really good book but Iv'e looked on amazon and I can't find it.

I bought this for ds who's 5.

Em, counteract that with the truth from you. Read up yourself and explain it to her.

Can't believe that in 2012 there is a school in Britain that will try to brainwash 6 year old's with this pish.

I took Ds to see gorillas and started talking about comparative anAtomy. If you go to a natural history museum you can often get to see different animal and hominid skulls etc. and use that to base your discussion. Ds is 6 and doesn't appreciate timescales but accepts what I am telling him despite a good dollop of religious education at school.he really liked it when he watched the cartoon film Pirates and Charles Darwin was in it.

I have the book moonstorm suggested and DS (5) has learnt a lot from it

Thank you for the suggestions. I'd seen that book before when I was trying to find something else moonstorm so thanks for the recommendation. Yama - I have done my best to counteract what she's been taught but she's more inclined to believe her teacher and the book they're using in school hence my desire to find something she can look at herself/with me. Finding out what she's been learning each day is like getting blood out of a stone but she will come out with snippets like 'God made the weather' last week when we were having that awful wind and rain.

When my DD was about that age she thought that her Great Granny used to be a monkey. I obviously hadn't quite got my explanations right! At 17 she has a much better understanding, thankfully.

pretty - similar thing with ds - he went into preschool and said to his teacher 'did you know that you used to be a monkey?'

I was recommended on here "the manky monkey" and "one smart fish". Both excellent picture books that promote conversation about evolution.

We love 'Our Family Tree: An Evolution Story'.

I know many year 6s who think that once upon a time a monkey gave birth to a human. As evolution isn't specifically on the primary curriculum it can be quite hard to try and explain it in two minutes whenever it comes up!

Are you sure that she is actaully being taught creationism and not "some people believe that..."? I'd be very surprised if it's the former but if it is then I'd have her out of there pronto.

Gold - as far as I'm aware yes it is creationism. I asked recently in the parent's evening and the teacher indicated that the book they're using is the Welsh translation of 'The Story of Creation' and I did mention that as non-believers and as the school is not a church school we wouldn't be particularly happy if this was all that was being taught. I understand that they do learn about other religions too. Having said that, DD did mention learning about 'mammoths and stuff' last term so it may be a little bit of this and a little bit of that - as I said, trying to get her to tell me what exactly she's doing each day is a job in itself! Unfortunately moving her is not an option. It is a tiny village school and there are no others within reasonable distance. I think if I can show her the 'other side' she can learn about both viewpoints whilst making sure that mine is the stronger one .
