READING BUDDIES

At my daughter's school parents are encouraged to provide reading support to local state primary kids who are struggling with their reading but no initiative has been set up in daughter's school There are a number of parents in daughter's school - whose children are so resistant to reading at home that they have been paired with teaching assistants (at an hourly rate) to help out at home! Any tips for how to set up a reading buddy scheme drawing on parents within the school community to replace the teaching assistants - as volunteer reading buddies.
What has worked - what to look out for - lessons learnt - gratefully received.

The TAs go to people's houses to teach their children to read? And the parents have to pay for it? Heh?

Isn't that what a school is for?

Our school has parents/others in to listen to children read. I don't think it took much to set up - appeals for help through the Newsletter and Groupcall.

Sounds like the school is really going to extra mile to help children who don't have much support at home.
