Year 3-huge drop since last year...any suggestions?

DS1 went up to Y3 at Junior School in September-it's a separate school from Infants but with same HT.

He isn't massively bright or anything but has always been good at reading. At the beginning of Y2 they were all assessed on Reading Ages which I know now don't really mean anything and at that point he was still only 6.7 years but had a reading age of 11 years and 4 months which I assumed was rather good.

Anyway he had a really good year last year and when they did their SATs he was a 3C for Maths and 3c for Reading but 2a for writing which is pretty much what I had expected as being a typical boy and doesnt really enjoy putting pen to paper!

We had parents evening last week and was told he has apparently gone up to a 3a in Maths but gone down to a 2c in Reading/Literacy which to me seems an awfully big jump. He certainly isn't the best reader in the class and it's not something he particularly enjoys (unless it's information books/football!) but Im actually quite shocked at this. Don't get me wrong it doesn't really matter what level he is on but Im rather disheartened that he has apparently got much worse.

He was free reading in Infants which possibly wasn't the greatest idea but cause the schools are separate they'd ran out of books at the higher levels so he was reading home books such as Roald Dahl, some Horrid Henry, Jeremy Strong and had now started on some David Walliams ones but he has gone back onto Banded Reading books which he is hating and flatly refusing to read. I get that an awful amount of it is down to comprehension but he reads every night and we talk about the book and he can tell me what its about etc.

I just don't get what else I can do to help him. To go up 2 sublevels in Maths since September Im assuming is pretty good but how on earth has he gone down that much in reading when he is still reading the same if not better than he did last year?
