story /creative writing : title suggestions

Where can I get hold of some titles for story writing for a year 2 and year 4 child who need to practice writing fiction? I ordered 'writing models' by pie Corbett from Amazon, but I really wanted specific titles rather than pieces of writing modelled by an adult.

Many thanks

My dd1 used to love doing that at that age.
What I did would give her the choice of three titles.

  1. Something she can write a story about: "The haunted house"
  2. A descriptive writing. "A garden in Spring"
  3. A first (or sometimes last) line. "Annabelle opened the huge box and inside there was..." (or "... so that was the end of the dragon.")

Book titles are often great starting points. (if they haven't read the book). Or in some cases chapter titles. I used a lot of Monica Edwards chapter titles, as she seemed particularly imaginitive. "Nice fried in butter" was one I used.

I don't understand, why don't you just make them up? That's what creative writing is all about.

Have you tried some of the other available approaches as well?

We have the Rory's Story Cubes which DD (7) uses to create her own stories and we are planning to get these for her for Xmas.

I do like those story cards. And the suggestion of opening sentences. Thanks

DeWe:

Why not make it a bit funny.

Imagine their teacher was sick and was repaced by an alien/ a spy/ a witch/ Father Christmas. What would the day be like?

Or perhaps the school cook was replaced/ what was lunch like? or the Head Teacher/ what was assembly like?.

Like the idea about trying to make it funny.
