Reading levels question - sort of!

It's less a levels question, more of a does everything stack up question

DD Y1 on ORT 5 at end of YR and since returning in Sept. no change, just plodding through scheme. Was told at parent evening she is working towards a 1c.

I'm happy with her reading, she enjoys it, uses intonation, voices etc.

Tonight I read her the 1st chapter of a Red Orion early reader this one

She begged for another chapter but I didn't tonight.
I can hear her, reading herself the book out loud word perfect. Same intonation, character voices.
Tis lovely and making me all warm and fuzzy

But is this a little way off her scheme book or a long way off?

I'd expect that your daughter should be able to read it herself. The vocabulary isn't difficult. What happens if she tries? You can google all the ORT levels and on Amazon look inside them. I haven't looked past stage 5. But the books that we're reading from the library go beyond what I've seen in ORT stage 5.

DD is also reading stage 5 and can read basic chapter books and home fairly fluently but tbh I do think that she will guess a couple of words according to the context of the rest of the sentence iyswim but does it so quickly that you may not always notice.

Don't know if this may be the case with your DD??

Also if you have just read the book to her, how much is she likely to "remember" rather than decode??

It is lovely when they read to themselves though, DD is reading Topsy and Tim in bed ATM...

Just clicked on the link for it and tbh DD could read that pretty easily and I would have thought if your DD is on ORT 5 she could read that herself...

How does she find the stage 5 ones from school??

The OP said she's only read the first chapter. So her daughter can read the next one.

I think her reading is a lot better than level 5. But I've thought that all through each level in YR!

The Orion book is the first time she has read a chapter book, albeit an easy one.

She didn't have a problem with any words, just kept reading where I left off.

Except names, Julius is a name she couldn't read in the book.

I expect names is a hard thing to master? They are often not very phonetic.

Then ask your librarian for the next three books at that level in the series and let your daughter read those all by herself. That's what I'm doing with a series that I feel is right for my daughter. (I found the first book in a second hand book sale.)

Well done to her! Fab! Time to hit the library. They should have lots of books that level, a bit harder, a bit easier etc and the joy is you can try them out and see what suits. Re good old ORT, well, ORT is useful in itself but it's a means to an ends (ie good decoding). Also reading chapter books independently takes a bit of maturity re patience/comprehension, not just the decoding, so although the vocabularly might not be that difficult it is more difficult in other ways, so well done again!
As simpson says, if you want to see what she can manage ORT wise try the Oxford Owl site. You are probably correct in your assumption that she can manage a good few levels harder than stage 5. From what I remember I'd guess she could have a go at 7 or 8 but it's so easy to just try it out, start on 5 and then try the harder levels. Or try straight on at this page which is level 7

You don't want her to be struggling, fine a stage where she can read almost all of it fluently, just the odd word that needs sounding out. Enjoy!

DS2 started reading the Early Reader books when he was book band 5 or 6 (Can't remember exactly). I tend to find that he can read what appear to be harder books than he is given at school, and happily sits down and reads them himself when he has no pressure at home. Often though I think it isn't that the words in the text are harder, but that the length of book is longer, so a stamina thing.
I wonder as well if children seem to read harder books at home because in school they are working on more than just reading the text, but comprehension, expression etc. For us it has worked quite well him reading harder things at home than school as it has given him oodles of confidence in his school work.

I don't think she 'performs' in school. But she is happy.

Definately agree re the stamina thing...

A good set of books to check out is the Frog and Toad books. DD is working her way through them and loving them...

What are the Frog and Toad books?

They are truly fab.

Another MNer recommended them to me.

They come in a box set of 4 books and are very simple in content (ie a story about friendship and the mishaps they get up to).

My DD is truly obsessed with them.

L&S - was it your DD who was into Green Eggs and Ham?? We were given a box set which included this book and I have to confess I did not think it would float her boat , but I was sooooo wrong!! She reads it all the time!!

Simpson, I couldn't make it from one day to the next without Dr Seuss. Makes my life worth living. (Well, in an early literacy sense!!! Hope no one misunderstands me.)

I hate dr Seuss.
Thankfully DD can read it but finds the pictures scary (as do I) so it can languish on the bookshelf for DH to read to DS.

If I can't find anything for her to read as she literally eats books I can rely on F and T!!

She has only read Green Eggs and Ham so far , but we have loads of others

Oh and she also likes a chapter book about Morris the cat...

Also sorry to confuse things but I thought ORT 5 was working towards a 1b unless the comprehension side of things is not equal...

I thought yellow ORT 3 was a 1c....

Don't think too much of DD Y1 teacher. But maternity cover so hey ho! Her heart isn't really in it and its waaay too obvious.

I bought the frog and toad for DS but alas they are unread...he was scared of the cover , ,this was in YR, he's a bit odd like that...still very cautious about a lot of movies etc... Am hoping DD will like them...
